Maple Leaf Metals is a successful and well established metals recycling business in Western Canada and has a long history in serving customers domestically and internationally. The business procures, processes and sells ferrous and non-ferrous metals and operates from locations in Edmonton and Fort McKay and has customers across Canada, U.S.A and Asia.
The Branch Manager role reports directly to the Ferrous Manager and has operational accountability for the Fort McKay, Alberta business. The purpose of the role is to lead the Fort McKay operations in all areas of sorting, processing and transporting ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal within the branch’s operational area and delivering operational safety and profitable returns through excellence in customer service and a capable team.

Responsibilities
- Responsible for the day to day operation of the Fort McKay operation in terms of production, efficiency, safety and maintenance.
- Lead the Fort McKay Team in developing clear business plan direction to improve business performance.
- Builds the capability of employees to meet current and future business needs through the application of sound people management practices and problem solving techniques
- Purchases ferrous and non ferrous scrap metal achieving business objectives in relation to APP and quality in consultation with trading managers.
- Establishes the site maintenance program allocating work including liaising with company maintenance employees and contractors ensuring that work is complete in a safety and cost effective manner.
- Maintains contact with scrap dealers and collectors providing them with regularly updated pricing and specifications on acceptable scrap criteria.
- Ensures branch activities and administration are recorded, maintained and stored in an efficient, legible and systematic manner.
- Collaborates with the Ferrous Manager to develop the branch operations plan which incorporates work area goals, targets and standards.
- Participates in the development of branch volume and expense budgets and leads the development of branch production forecasts. Ensures margins are met taking into account market conditions, purchasing practices, costs and production targets
- Sets the standards in safety behaviour at the branch through providing leadership on safety matters as well as compliance to both policies and procedures and legislative requirements.
- Provide systems of work & ensure understanding & application of the critical safe work systems.
- Development of 5 year Capital Expenditure plans and Major Asset Improvement plans to improve long-term asset condition and optimize operational security.
- Responsible for a budgets, purchase orders, and asset purchases.
- Counsels and disciplines team members when their performance does not meet company expectations in relation to safety, personal behaviour or non compliance with established company policies and procedures.
Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in steel scrap yard operations and familiarity with scrap industry equipment, physical operations and personnel
- Minimum of 5 years supervising or directly using scrap industry specific heavy duty equipment, and fully knowledgeable of its operations, maintenance requirements, and repair work in a remote industrial work environment.
- Project management experience
- Apprenticeship training in Millwright, Mechanic or Electrical Trades
- College certificate in project management, maintenance and scheduling or related fields
- Knowledge of scrap operations including material types and grades, purchasing and sales strategies, efficient processing, maintenance requirements and logistics.
- Strong leadership, analytical, organization, communication and computer competency skills.
- Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to a wide range of practical problems; deal with a large number of variables and determine a specific course of action.
- This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile
Terms of Employment:
- 1 vacancy
- Permanent, full time employment.
- Worksite located in Fort McKay, Alberta with applicants not resident to the area working four weeks in with one out
- Compensation is $125K – $155K per annum
- Daily living out allowance as well as reasonable travel to home location for applicants not resident to the area
